Diamond/Gold/Iron blocks not dropping anything when broken

I made some Gold, Diamond and Iron blocks to store them, and I went to break some and nothing dropped! They essentially vanished into thin air. Now I just lost 20+ diamonds and iron because of this. Why did this happen and can I be refunded?
